The Hubbard Foundation

The vision of David Hubbard MD for the Hubbard Foundation is to investigate the neurophysiological foundations of consciousness and meditation and their influence on brain functioning, health and peace. The Hubbard Foundation uses fMRI to conduct this important research. fMRI stands for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging and uses MRI technology to measure the changes in blood flow to brain areas associated specific brain functions.

The Hubbard Foundation runs the fMRI studies on meditation and consciousness at the Applied fMRI Institute in San Diego, CA with a Siemens 3T tim Trio scanner. We design neuropsychological experiments, with the input of experts in various fields. We recruit subjects relevant to our studies by pursuing collaborative relationships with local, national, and global organizations. We scan the subjects, collecting anatomical as well as functional data. We analyze the data using proven statistical methods and advanced computer software designed especially for fMRI data analysis. We provide the participants with their brain scans showing which parts of the brain are active; was there visual imagery, was there inner speech? Did the attention and awareness areas activate? Did the compassion area activate?
